Excursion to the Niederwald Temple
The Niederwald Temple is one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Rheingau. Situated high above Rüdesheim, it offers a sweeping view over the Rhine, the vineyards and the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The classicist circular building was built in 1790 as part of the landscaped park belonging to Count Karl Maximilian von Ostein. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was inspired by the landscape here in 1814, which is why the temple is still known today as the "Goethe Temple".
Anyone who visits Niederwald quickly realizes why this place has been attracting travellers, poets and nature lovers for centuries. The harmonious combination of nature, culture and views makes every visit a special experience: whether on a hike through the Ostein's coppice foresta walk in the golden autumn or a cable car ride up over the vineyards.
